This is the sixth in a series of articles
profiling the high schools of the Minneapolis Public Schools, giving academic
performance, student population data, and contact information. This and many other recent and looming
articles foreshadow matters covered in my book, Fundamentals of an Excellent Liberal Arts Education, due in
complete form very soon, in November 2018.
As you evaluate the academic results, be aware
that the top score on the ACT is 36 and that a score of 18 represents very
minimal college readiness, that a score of 21 indicates possible readiness,
that selective institutions expect a score of 25, and that highly selective
institutions expect scores in the 28-36 range;
best chance for scholarships and good financial aid packages going to
those students scoring in the 28-36 range on the ACT.
A student who scores below 18 on the ACT is
most likely to struggle even if gaining college or university acceptance and
will be in danger of dropping out; this
applies also to many students who score in the 18-21 range. Academic viability as a college or university
student typically is associated with a score of 21 or higher on the ACT. Students achieving below a score of 18, and
many who score in the 18-21 range, will need to take remedial courses once
matriculating on a college or university campus. Very few graduates of the Minneapolis Public
Schools are prepared for success at the college or university level. One-third of MPS graduates need remediation
once matriculating on a college or university campus.
