Article #13 in a Series >>>>> Departments and Offices of the Minneapolis Public Schools >>>>> Athletics Department

As I complete the advanced final draft of my new book, Understanding the Minneapolis Public Schools:  Current Condition, Future Prospect, I am conducting a final review for updating mission statements and staff composition.  I have in the last days and weeks listed and made comments on many offices and departments, with an emphasis on staff members and effectiveness.  In the current series of articles I will be emphasizing departmental function and mission statements, but I will give staff listing updates as I deem useful to my readers and will give staff composition in cases for which I have not previously done so.

The MPS Athletics Department is led by Athletics Director Antony Fisher.

In the nations across the globe with the best public education systems, as indicated on the Program of International Student Assessment (PISA) and by measures of economic equity produced by a geographically consistent public education system of excellence, this would be a nonexistent position.  But in the United States, we care more about athletics, entertainment, and social status than we do education, so in the K-12 systems of the nation athletics gets overweening attention.  In particular, we give lavish attention these days to the African American male football and basketball player (rather than the stellar academic achiever), putting the former at risk for lifelong injury and giving both the illusion that they, too, can be the next multi-million superstar.  In fact, we have many non-graduates from high schools doing the street hustle and maintaining their illusions on the courts of city parks, scraping out an unsatisfactory existence because they were never given anything remotely resembling an acceptable education.

Please, then, consider those comments as you review information and the claims made by those at the  MPS Athletics Department as presented on the pertinent portal of the MPS website.
