Article #8 in a Series >>>>> Departments and Offices of the Minneapolis Public Schools >>>>> Department of Finance

As I complete the advanced final draft of my new book, Understanding the Minneapolis Public Schools:  Current Condition, Future Prospect, I am conducting a final review for updating mission statements and staff composition.  I have in the last days and weeks listed and made comments on many offices and departments, with an emphasis on staff members and effectiveness.  In the current series of articles I will be emphasizing departmental function and mission statements, but I will give staff listing updates as I deem useful to my readers and will give staff composition in cases for which I have not previously done so.

The Finance Department is one of the very best-led departments at the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS).  Chief Finance Officer Ibrahima Diop joined in 2016, discovered a mess, and rapidly went about setting matters aright.  Along with Superintendent Ed Graff, who has been astute enough to internalize Diop’s  wise counsel, the district is on its way toward a structurally balanced budget and careful targeting of resources in those areas most affecting student academic performance.

The Finance Department portal on the MPS website does not provide a link giving all staff members of this department.  I will be regathering this information and updating this article in the days ensuing in the run-up to publication of  Understanding the Minneapolis Public Schools:  Current Condition, Future Prospect.

Here I give information for the MPS Department of Finance, drawn from the pertinent portal on the MPS website.

Welcome to the division of Finance Division website. The office of the Chief Financial Officer leads the division of Finance, which is responsible for the overall fiscal management of the district. Finance functions as the financial disbursement operation.

The Finance division umbrella includes Accounts Payable, Budget, Benefits, Payroll, Procurement, and Student Accounting Departments. Some of the responsibilities covered in these departments are monies for student-generated revenue, legislative allocations, budget accountability, annual budget tie-out process, fiscal auditing as well as grants management.
