Introductory Comments:
Student Academic Proficiency Rates
By MPS Associate Superintendent
Schools of Supervisory Responsibility
Consider the formal
description of associate superintendent responsibilities at the Minneapolis
Public Schools:
The associate superintendent is responsible for
creating
and modeling a culture of high expectations and
providing ongoing support and oversight to school
building leaders. The associate superintendent works
with school communities to create the necessary
conditions
that result in dramatic and accelerated student achievement,
closing the achievement gap and improving overall
school
performance.
Thus, Associate
Superintendents at the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) have supervisory
responsibility over a number of schools under their supervision. Building principals report directly to the
associate superintendents and are supposed to heed counsel of the latter as to
initiatives for improving student academic proficiency. In my new book, Understanding the Minneapolis Public Schools: Current Condition, Future Prospect, and
in many places on my blog, I evaluate the effectiveness of the Associate
Superintendents. I have also spoke to
the effectiveness of the Associate Superintendents in my Public Comments at
meetings of the MPS Board of Education and have addressed the matter on my
television show and at numerous speaking venues.
In this issue of Journal of the K-12 Revolution: Essays and Research from Minneapolis,
Minnesota, I present strictly objective information concerning student
academic proficiency rates at the schools under supervision by the various
Associate Superintendents. In presenting
this information, I entreat my readers to analyze the data carefully and to
form your own views in anticipation of reviewing my own comments as to the
effectiveness of those in the position of Associate Superintendent.
