During academic year 2018-2019, she had responsibility for middle schools and high schools. Given that new associate superintendent Shawn Harris-Berry, who now has oversight duties for high schools, is trained in much the same way as her fellow associate superintendents, with very slight academic credentials that indicate no expertise in any subject area at the core of MPS student schedules, her continuance of Steinbach-Huther’s failure is highly probable.
Harris-Berry’s personal failure can be witnessed in her record as principal at North High School, included in the date presented below. Harris-Berry’s failure at North strengthens the likelihood of her failure as associate superintendent.
Consider the formal description of associate superintendent responsibilities at the Minneapolis Public Schools:
The associate superintendent is responsible for
creating and modeling a culture of high expectations and providing ongoing
support and oversight to school building leaders. The associate superintendent
works with school communities to create the necessary conditions that result in
dramatic and accelerated student achievement, closing the achievement gap and
improving overall school performance.
This statement of associate superintendent responsibilities is just so much verbiage, of the kind that pervades all major documents pertinent to academics and that fills so many meetings at the district.
Three questions arise once more, as follows:
Are these ineffective academic decision-makers and actors
1) woefully ignorant;
2) in severe denial;
3) or morally corrupt?
Shawn Harris-Berry is one of those who roam the halls at the Davis Center (MPS central offices, 1250 West Broadway) who fail to deliver a knowledge-intensive, skill-replete education to the students who are her sacred responsibility.
A review of the schools for which Harris-Berry now assumes duties previously ill-performed by Steinbach-Huther reveals multiple years of failure and no meaningful bright spots over the course of academic years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 under the program of our non-academician of a superintendent, Ed Graff.
Please now investigate the six-year student proficiency rates at MPS high schools:
