The
Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT59) is the union representing the
teachers of the Minneapolis Public Schools.
This Minneapolis teachers union is affiliated with Education Minnesota
at the state level; Education Minnesota
has dual affiliation with both important teachers unions at the national level,
the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of
Teachers (AFT).
The Minneapolis
Federation of Teachers is a union of professionals
that champions
fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and
high-quality public
education, healthcare and public services for our
students, their
families and our communities. We are committed to
advancing these
principles through community engagement, organizing,
collective
bargaining and political activism, and especially through the
work our members do.
In
practice, the MFT in one of its aspects does what good unions do: bargains in the economic , health, and
retirement interests of its members. But
the assertion of the MFT to be an organization of professionals working to
advance high-quality education runs counter to the union’s opposition to many
approaches and initiatives that would in fact promote excellent,
knowledge-intensive, skill-replete education for the students of the
Minneapolis Public Schools, accompanied by careful objective assessment.
