And
yet, compare systems of K-12 education with the system that prevails at
colleges and universities. There is no Department of Teaching and Learning on
college and university campuses that establish curricula or superintend the
provision of academic instruction to students.
The prevailing assumption is that professors are people of knowledge and
in departments of mathematics, physics, English, history, economics, music, and
art are the only staff capable of establishing the courses offered.
This
should be the case with K-12 teachers, as well.
But
in view of the fact that K-5 teachers are trained entirely in departments,
colleges, and schools of education, they graduate from their teacher training
programs with very limited knowledge bases, poised to do little in their classrooms
but provide a smattering of mathematics and reading instruction and spout
jargon imbibed from education professors.
And
while most grades 6-12 teachers do major in academic fields as undergraduates, they
did not necessarily perform at the highest level in those fields and they tend overwhelmingly
to pursue master’s degrees in education.
Hence,
teachers are rarely academicians or scholars.
The
same is true for staff leaders such as (see below) Cecilia Saddler, Naomi
Taylor, and Carey Seeley, who have also done their work almost entirely in
education.
As
the K-12 Revolution sweeps the halls of the Davis Center, teachers will be
retrained to be people of knowledge with the capability of imparting strong
knowledge and skill sets to their students.
The Department of Teaching and Learning and the $3,000,000 budgetary burden
that it imposes on the system will be jettisoned. Teachers organized as genuine scholars and academicians
will be academically knowledgeable and best positioned to construct and impart curricula.
Here
are the current staff members of the MPS Department of Teaching and Learning
that will be swept away by the K-12 Revolution:
