Profiles
There are forty-one (41) elementary, eleven (11)
middle or preK-8 schools, twelve (12) high schools, and seven (7) specialized
programs in the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS); additionally, MPS contracts with eight (8)
private entities to provide alternative education to MPS students. These figures yield a total of sixty-four
(64) elementary, middle/preK-8, and high schools; the seven specialized programs bring the
total number of schools under MPS administration to seventy-one (71), with the
eight contracted alternative programs serving as additional options for MPS
students.
In this edition of Journal of the K-12
Revolution: Essays and Research from
Minneapolis, Minnesota, I provide comprehensive profiles of all of these
schools serving students enrolled in the Minneapolis Public Schools. The information given is derived mostly from
the websites of the individual schools, typically including school address,
phone number, fax number, and hours of operation; building principal, with contact
information; demographic composition of
student population; features essential
to each school’s identity as expressed on the website, including school
programming and particular curricular and extracurricular emphases.
Additionally,
I have included student academic proficiency rates, disaggregated according to
ethnicity, free/reduced lunch status, English Language Learner (ELL)
identification, and special education enrollment. I have compiled this information from the
Data Report Card given on the Minneapolis Public Schools website.
Article #1
gives school profiles for MPS elementary schools, followed by school profiles for
middle and preK-8 schools, high schools, alternative schools, and specialized
programs in articles #2, #3, #4, and #5 respectively.
