I have
recently been running articles adapted
from the chapter on the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) Board of Education in
my book, Understanding the Minneapolis
Public Schools: Current Condition,
Future Prospect, that clearly reveal the ineptitude and moral corruption of
the current board.
Readers should be acutely aware that they
now have considerable ability to overhaul the MPS Board of Education, first
with their vote in the primary this coming Tuesday, 11 August; then, especially, with their votes on
Tuesday, 3 November, in the general election. Some readers may have already voted in the
primary by mail. Those who will be
voting on the official primary date of Tuesday, 11 August, should be especially
on high alert in reading this article.
And all readers should consider these comments with great care as we
look ahead to the Tuesday, 3 November, general election.
For now we are stuck with MPS Board of
Education Members Nelson Inz (District 5), Siad Ali (District 3), Kim Caprini (At-Large),
and Josh Pauly (At-Large), of whom Inz and Caprini would best resign forthwith
if they had the capacity to search their souls.
You may scroll on down for details on the moral corruption and lack of
aptitude for the job that those two demonstrate every day their feet hit the
ground. In the category of being stuck
with current membership, we must add Ira Jourdain, who though his seat is up
for election faces no opposition and thus will hold onto his District 6
position..
The better news, though, is that voters
have a real chance to oust current board chair and At-Large Member Kim Ellison
and District 2 Member KerryJo Felder;
and to get fresh, vibrant membership in the District 4 seat, for which
some Gift from Heaven has given us the Blessed News that Bob Walser is not
running for reelection (scroll on down for Walser’s status as the silliest, most
offensive member of the current board).
As you take a look now at the line-ups for
the primary, know that I recommend Lynne Crockett for the At-Large seat
currently held by Ellison; Sharon
El-Amin for the District 2 seat that she will contest with Felder in the
general election; and Adriana Cerrillo
for the District 4 seat so blessedly abdicated by Walser.
There is not much drama in any of this at
the stage of the primary, except for the District 4 seat:
Remembering that the top two vote-getting
candidates for each seat will gain position to contest in the general election,
Crockett is a well-known presence in North Minneapolis who will likely clear the
primary to face Ellison; and El-Amin is
already assured a position to contest the District 2 seat against Felder. The multiple candidates contesting for the
District 4 seat are less well-known. So
do be especially attentive to my recommendation of the spirited activist for
the Latina/Latino and general public good, Adriana Cerrillo, for the District 4
seat.
Here are the primary line-ups, with my
