A Note to My Readers
>>>>>
The following compilation
presents the current staff working at the Davis Center (Central Offices of the
Minneapolis Public Schools [MPS], 1250 West Broadway), adapted from information
provided by MPS Data Requests and Department of Human Resources. Notice
that a number of positions given at the end of the list have not been
filled. Current staffing at the Davis Center as indicated by positions
actually filled appears to be at 444 staff members--- down dramatically
from the 650 or so staff positions that typically prevail at
the district. Even if all of the positions now open are filled, the
total number of staff would just be 508--- still a dramatic
reduction of the central office staff burden, a circumstance for which I have
long advocated and heartily approve. Also, there appear to
be many new positions, such as community outreach workers and
community liaisons, who seemingly would have many of the functions that I
have advocated in many articles; I will be examining these
positions closely to see if they do in fact have the capacity to reach out
to families that struggle with problems of poverty and functionality for the
direct provision of services and for resource referral.
If the staff reductions hold, and
outreach workers are working effectively, then Superintendent Ed Graff has made
two very powerful positive initiatives. Were Graff now to move
forward to address the problems of curriculum and teacher quality, and to
implement an aggressive program of skill remediation (tutoring) for students
struggling below grade level in math and reading, he would have acted in the
five areas to which I have given abundant coverage in advancing my
five-point program for the overhaul of the Minneapolis Public Schools to become
a model for the locally centralized school district.
If the indicated changes were to be
made, I would laud Graff enthusiastically.
In the days to come, I will be
examining the following list with great care, determining
how committed Ed Graff is to permanent staff reductions at the Davis
Center; how serious he is about family outreach; and how
capable the current leadership is of making the needed changes in curriculum,
teacher quality, and the implementation of an academic enrichment program that
offers tutoring and additional learning opportunities to all
students.
